15-16 July 2016Capsule

Explore Uppsala's start-up/tech community, show us your creativeness in coding and win tech prizes!

๐Ÿ˜บ  Why do we do this?

To celebrate the opening of Capsule, Uppsala's first collection of cubicles for tech start-ups, we decided to organize a hackathon to spread the word! What start-ups are at Capsule today, why are they here, what do they do, and most important of all: how can you utilize Capsule now or in the future? We also wish to present this fine city's tech community, which Capsule is a part of, to its future developers (you students). Because believe it or not, you don't need to move all the way to Silicon Valley (or even Stockholm) to work in tech!

๐ŸŽจ  Theme and examples

Have you ever wished you've had access to certain means or a mechanism which would've helped you when carrying out a specific task - like the hammer was invented to bang nails? Let's create them! Therefore the theme of the hackathon is Tools, i.e. those for developers or the general public (read life hacks). Here are some examples that might get your creative gears grinding:

  • An API which can help developers to connect their software on the interwebs with telecom features.
  • An extension for web browsers that displays your incoming SMS/emails/phone calls and lets you reply and answer them, so that you don't need to bring out  your phone every time.
  • A library for the programming language of your choice.
  • An application for your phone that lets you sort your Snapchat contacts into lists, so that you can choose a list of contacts to send a snap to instead of choosing every contact one by one.

๐ŸŽฏ  Hack objectives

  • Develop the most useful and creative tool to win first prize!
  • Get to know more about Capsule and Uppsala's tech community.
  • Eat free food.
  • Meet new people, learn from each other and have fun!

๐Ÿ†  Prizes

All participating teams will receive a 46elks sticker and patch, as well as a student's most desirable treasure - a bag packed with food! Furthermore, each member of the winning teams of the hackathon will be awarded the following:

๐Ÿ‘ฎ  The coding starts when the hackathon starts, i.e. you're not allowed to start on your project before hand. The winner is selected by the organizers.

๐Ÿ’ƒ  Come by and say hi! Let us know if you want to come by and mingle during the event. You'll be very welcome, we just want to make sure we have enough space and beverages for everyone.

๐Ÿ™‹  Do you want to get a more personal connection with the members of Capsule and get to know what it is like to organize these sort of events? Email one of the organizers and volunteer to help out!

Where and when has the capsule landed?

Our new venue is located downtown Uppsala, with very close connections to both the Central station and Big square (Stora torget). The entrance is just in-between Teknikmagasinet and Wayne's Coffee. However, to be able to house more people during the hack, the venue for the hackathon has been changed to Dragarbrunnsgatan 78 C. Feel free to click on the map to the right for further directions!

The doors will open 18:00 on Friday 15/7. This is the weekend after the end of the European Championship so admit it, you'll have nothing else to do then either way. When everyone has arrived we'll all have something to eat while we let you know more about Capsule and what start-ups and communities that are a part of it. When all bellies are full, the hackathon will start at 19:00.  A meal will then be served around 01:00, followed by breakfast at 08:00 and lunch at 13:00. The hacking lasts until the last man stands (16:00 on Saturday 16/7). The teams will at that deadline also have prepared presentations for their projects. and then present their results to the other participants and members of Capsule. Finally, the winners will be presented right after!
